The journey of grief is a cyclical one. I keep finding new thoughts and perspectives on my mom's death that bring the grief back to the forefront again. A few weeks ago it was the realization that I didn't really get to have a birthday. So I wrote a little birthday song for myself.

My two year old has been learning the alphabet. Unfortunately, he is currently under the impression that Y is followed by R. He has been singing in a loop for about ten minutes now...

The Girl From Moab
You may have noticed that I haven't been posting on my blog as much as I used to. There are many things that have been keeping me from writing as much as I'd like, but one of the more exciting reasons is that I have been putting a lot of time into the revisions of my original musical, The Girl From Moab!
This musical was originally written six years ago as a summer project with a co-worker of mine. The original musical was just over an hour long and was very well received by the local audience that came to see it performed. Since then, it has been a dream of mine to expand it into a full-length musical, and that is finally happening!! I have spent the past seven months re-writing the book, and now I am moving onto the music. Many of the original songs are being adapted and re-written, and there are over ten new songs being added!
I'd love for all of you to be just as excited about it as I am, so I am going to be posting updates ever now and then on how the revisions are going. Maybe I will even give you little sneak peaks and inside information about the script!
My next task, complete the score: 1 song down, 22 to go!

Mommy Moments: Johnny Appleseed
Trying to do stretches when young children are present is always an interesting experience. In my occasional attempts, I have been climbed on, sat on, tickled, poked, and generally forced to stop within a very short amount of time.

Currently: Music Choices
Maybe I'm weird, but different kinds of media have always kind of been like friends for me. Basically what I mean is that I have the ones that I know and like, and I gravitate towards those ones. I don't mind making new media "friends", but if given a choice I'll usually choose to "hang out" with something I know I like.
It's like that for movies in particular. I can watch my favourites over and over, and someone usually has to twist my arm before I'll give a new movie a try. While I am more open to reading new novels, if I just want to relax I'll usually reach for an old favourite.
Music is similar too, though a lot of the reason is that I don't have the time or energy to put the effort into finding new music that I like. And I am quite content to listen to my favourites again.
Here's a bit of what I have been listening to lately:
Getting stuff done around the house:
When I'm looking for something upbeat I generally turn on some Needtobreathe, especially their Hard Love album.
Dancing with the kids:
Lately I've enjoyed "rediscovering" and introducing the kids to Michael Mitchell's Canada is for Kids.
Chill background music:
When I'm just hanging out and want some music on, Josh Garrels wins every time.
Calming Music:
When I have a few minutes to myself and need to breathe deeply, I always turn on Handel's Messiah. I especially love "Comfort ye" and "He shall feed".

A poem for someone I know who is going through a very hard time that I hold in my heart as I lead worship at church.

Fingers dancing
Over black and white keys
Through each note
Pouring my heart out
To our Saviour
I think about you
The long road you have traveled
Waiting for hope
That tomorrow might be better
Carrying the weight
Of fear
Of pain
Of a past you cannot forget
How you long to hide
Away from the world
Away from everything
And everyone you love
And who loves you
In a back corner of my heart
I remember your pain
I feel it
I pour it through my fingers

"Need Each Other"
Two posts in one day? What is this madness??!?
I just wanted to share a little project with you that I have been working on over the last couple days. Jordan Taylor, a person I follow on YouTube, has an album coming out soon, and he invited people to participate in a contest by recording a cover of one of his songs (Need Each Other). I originally wasn't planning to be involved, (how could I have time for that?!) but the song got stuck in my head and seemed to connect with where I have been at lately. So, long story short, I recorded a cover of his song!
The reality that "We all need each other" is significant for me, as I struggle with loneliness. Recording this song became a way of expressing myself and giving voice to that inward longing. I hope that you enjoy it!
