Christmas Journey

This Christmas I had the opportunity to write the material for a Christmas Prayer Journey, which invites people to a time of reflection and prayer while walking around a beautiful acreage. I shared the booklet on my website, and I would like to extend an invitation for anyone who is interested in checking it out:

Christmas Journey

This Christmas season has been really hard for me, as I am sure it is for many others. I really miss my mom, and it's hard to process having our first Christmas without her. I am also very thankful for everything that I do have this Christmas, and it is good to be able to have a quiet, restful Christmas this year. Working on the prayer walk has been very meaningful for me, and I pray that it can be a blessing to you too.

I hope that you all have a very special Christmas!

Isaiah 9:2

The people walking in darkness
walking in depression
walking in anxiety
walking in grief
walking in fear
lost and alone

Have seen a great light
a great hope
a great peace
a great joy
a great love
a Saviour

On those living in the land of deep darkness
the land ravaged by famine
the land torn by war
the land shattered by injustice
the land numbed by affluence
a broken and hurting world

A light has dawned
a hope has dawned
a peace has dawned
a joy has dawned
a love has dawned
God is with us

A Toddler Christmas Tree

I see your Charlie Brown Christmas Tree and raise you a... Toddler Christmas Tree!

This fine specimen has a 100% success rate of staying upright (so far), and entirely unbreakable decorations (if you don't count the lights). The top half of the tree sports several sparkly necklaces from the dress-up box and a nice assortment of Christmas cards and photos, as well as one star ornament. The bottom half of the tree holds two paper chains which are sometimes on the tree, sometimes on the floor, and sometimes being waved wildly around the house. Best of all, I can tell you with pride that this Christmas tree is 74.5% conflict free. The primary source of conflict has been stopping the toddlers from unplugging the lights. There has also been a very small number of arguments between the toddlers regarding whose paper chain is whose.

I had great aspirations of setting up a more tastefully decorated Christmas tree downstairs where my breakable ornaments would be safe, but have not had the time or energy to indulge in such a frivolous desire. Besides, when one has such a fine Toddler Christmas Tree, how could one wish for anything else?

Mommy Moments: Pretty Lights

Taking Steven for a walk these days primarily consists of explaining to him again and again that "Mommy can't turn on those lights, only the people who live in that house can turn on their Christmas lights."

Celebrating God-With-Us

We were delighted to be able to surprise my in-laws by joining them for Christmas this year.  It's been several years since we've been able to be with them for Christmas, and most of the family hadn't had a chance to meet Kenneth yet.  Being there with them was very special.  It reminded me that no matter what is wrapped under the tree, the very best present is presence - the presence of family and friends and our Saviour Jesus who is Emmanuel.  God is indeed with us, and we are so thankful.

I wish all of you a most blessed new year, and that you may know the love and presence of our God who is with us.

Merry Christmas 2016

Merry Christmas!

The past year has had many struggles and challenges, but also many joys and blessings.  We are so thankful for our family - both the family of blood and those who have chosen to be part of our family.  Jesus gives us hope for each new day, and we have a lot to be thankful for!

Paper Snowflakes Part 2

Last week I wrote about making paper snowflakes and how they are one of my favourite winter crafts.  I made more snowflakes since then, and they turned out so well that I just had to share them with you!

This time I tried making name snowflakes.  Basically you make them the same way as a regular one, but when it is time to cut a design, you use a name as the design.

For example, here is one I made with Steven's name.  It is important to make sure all of the letters are touching each other and touching both the top and the bottom of the triangle.

Then you cut out the name so that it is all one piece.  Cutting it can be a little tricky depending on how long the name is and the kinds of letters it includes.  I managed with scissors, but it would have been a lot easier with an exacto knife.

The final result is beautiful!  And you would never guess that it's made from someone's name unless you knew to look closely.  And every name makes such a unique snowflake.  Here is Kenneth's:

I made a name snowflake for each person living in our home, and used them as name tags for our stockings!

I am getting very excited for Christmas!  What is your favourite thing about this time of year?

Paper Snowflakes

One of my favourite winter crafts of all time is making paper snowflakes.  In the past some people have said they really like my snowflakes, so I thought I'd share how I make them.

Fold a square of paper in half diagonally.

Fold the bottom point up to the front,

And the top point down across the back, so the paper is divided in even thirds.

Fold in half.

Trim the uneven ends.

Cut a design, the crazier the better!  Just make sure not to cut away all of the folded sides, because then it would just fall apart.

Unfold and admire your finished snowflake!  Then have a snowflake-making party with your friends and decorate for Christmas!

Currently: November 22

Currently, I am...

Listening to: Christmas music!  Specifically, Christmas music by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, because who wouldn't want to listen to carol of the bells played by electric guitars?

Trying to: Get the baby to fall asleep.  He has a bit of a cold, so he's being harder to settle than normal.

Thinking about: My audition that I am leaving for very soon.  Yes, I'm auditioning to be part of a theatrical production! If I get a role you will probably hear lots more about it.  If I don't, then probably not so much.

Eating: At the moment, nothing, but lately my go-to snack has been a spoon of peanut butter with chocolate chips on it.

What are you currently listening to, trying to do, thinking about, and eating?

Dairy-Free Fudge

Shhhh.... I'm going to tell you a secret!  Promise not to give it away?  I'm giving Jesse fudge for Christmas!  He loves fudge, but it is pretty expensive, and anyway he shouldn't eat it because of the dairy in it.  So I am making dairy-free fudge!

To be honest, if you're reading this after Christmas morning, it's not a secret anymore.  But it's fun to think that we are sharing a secret anyways!

This fudge is so yummy, and it's actually a really easy recipe, so I thought I'd share it with you.

Dairy-Free Fudge

Sift 4 cups icing sugar and 1/2 cup cocoa powder into a bowl.  Add 1 cup chocolate chips, and set aside.  (If you want the recipe to be strictly dairy-free, be sure to use dairy-free chocolate chips.)

In a medium pot, measure 1/2 cup almond milk and 2 tablespoons margarine.

Heat on a medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until it starts boiling.  Remove from the heat and add the sugar/cocoa mixture.

Mix, and add 1 teaspoon of flavouring (vanilla extract, mint extract, hazelnut extract, etc.).  I used mint extract.  Hooray for chocolate-mint yumminess!

Mix until thoroughly combined.  I found that it got pretty stiff by the time I was done.

Spread in an 8x8 pan.  I used a silicone pan, and it worked really well!  If you use a regular pan, you would want to grease it or line it with parchment paper.  I found that the easiest way to spread it out was with the back of a spoon.

Cool in the fridge for several hours.

I turned it out onto a cutting board to cut it into squares.

And I decorated them with crushed candy canes.

In a tin, ready to give to Jesse!  The fudge needs to be stored in the fridge or freezer, since it gets pretty soft if you leave it at room temperature for too long.  You can check out the original recipe at this link.

Pretty Christmas fudge!

What are some of your favourite kinds of Christmas baking?

A Poem Remembering Those for Whom Christmas is not Easy

For some people
Christmas is not easy.

Like the young family
Friends gone for the holidays
Or too busy with their own families
To remember they are alone.

Like the old man
Last living of his peers
Sitting alone in his room
With his memories.

Like the shattered family
Heartbroken and hurting
No longer gathering
In the same place.

Like the person who said goodbye
To someone they love deeply
And the empty place at the table
Somehow seems emptier.

Like the young woman
Poor and far from home
Pregnant and uncomfortable
With nowhere to stay for the night.

For some people
Christmas is not easy.

Christmas Penguins

I came across this cute project idea, and it immediately got bumped to the front of my projects list!  It's pretty simple, and once again uses normal household items that are otherwise useless - this time, burned out light bulbs!

We happened to have a few lying around.  To start, you paint one side white.  I found that I had to do two coats.

Next, you paint the black, making them look like little penguins.

Then paint the faces.

The winter accessories were a little harder, because I didn't have a pattern.  I just used some yarn scraps, and through trial and error was able to crochet three little toques and scarves.

I used some wire to make it possible to hang these little guys on a Christmas tree.

Then it was just putting the pieces together with a bit of glue.  Meet papa penguin, mama penguin, and baby penguin!

What a cute little family!
